GPS—What Is It? GPS, or Global Positioning Systems, is a
way of tracking vehicles and navigating the world. GPS combines
extensive databases, telephony, satellite imaging, the Internet, and the
latest hardware and software developments to track every type of
vehicle. All make use of an internationally maintained network of
low-flying satellites that emit regular beacons which are triangulated
to determine a location on the earth with pinpoint accuracy. Combine
accuracy and fast telemetry with an extensive databank of roads and
highways, and you've got a superior navigational aid.
How does GPS work?
GPS, or global positioning systems
technology, is possible because of a group of 24 satellites orbiting the
earth that are constantly relaying information to receivers on earth
about the location (latitude and longitude) of a car or other vehicle
with a transmitter. A GPS system can also tell how fast the vehicle is
going and its direction of travel.
